Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.

Job Description

NBC Sports is looking for a Researcher to join the team for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympic Winter Games. The position will require sound editorial judgment, quick decision making, and a strong knowledge of winter Olympic sports.

The Games-time Olympic researcher will be (or become) an expert in their assigned sport (or Sports) and work with a larger group of researchers to help ensure the accuracy and integrity of everything that goes on air across NBC and its entities throughout the duration of the 2026 Olympics.

Olympic researchers may also work on-set supporting NBC’s numerous studio shows during the Games. The primary responsibility of an on-set researcher is to fact check and edit copy written by the studio writer, and to inform and educate the host and show talent on storylines, event formats, competition outlook, and any news or otherwise sensitive stories that develop over the course of the Olympics.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a project / limited term position with an estimated duration of 1 month during Games Time, unless otherwise amended or terminated as deliverables within this project are completed.

Responsibilities:

Become experts in the rules, results, histories, athletes and stories in their assigned Olympic sport(s).
Develop, compile and circulate information about Olympic sports and athletes for NBC’s coverage of the Milan-Cortina Olympics
Track all live action pertaining to assigned sports. Must be able to follow the developments in those sports in the weeks leading up to the Games and during the Games themselves
Compile and edit athlete biographies, previews, and results
Monitor social media and online publications for reaction, developing stories, and news on Olympians and Olympic events
Provide regular contributions to the daily internal Olympic research newsletter
Proactively prepare and provide updates and alerts on events and news for NBC Sports personnel. Must be able to provide smart and accurate editorial guidance and insight.
Create and foster relationships with sources within assigned sports and lean on those sources to answer questions and provide insight throughout the Games.
Respond to specific research requests from production personnel, on-air talent, and various NBC entities.

Maintain the accuracy and integrity of on-air content
On-set researchers will support show talent, writers, and producers to ensure clarity and accuracy in all copy and graphics created for the show.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Minimum one (1) year of experience in sports journalism or related field or equivalent work experience (ie senior writer or editor at a college/professional newspaper or magazine, experience in a sports information office, experience providing sports information for on-air broadcasters)
Strong knowledge of – and interest in – Olympic sports required
Submission of writing samples
Excellent writing skills with proven journalistic writing ability
Demonstrated editorial judgment and commitment to accuracy and fact checking
Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure and meet deadlines
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Proficiency in additional languages is a plus
On-set researchers must have experience working on set of a live studio show

Desired Characteristics:

Experience working in one or more Olympic sports – particularly network level research and writing – preferred.
Candidates should be versatile, self-motivated, energetic and able to work well both independently and as part of a group
Sound editorial judgment and clear, efficient writing ability
Ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure, meet deadlines, sustain focus on assigned duties and multi-task
Experience in news gathering and/or working in studio production
Strong working knowledge of various research sources and methods
