What will I be doing?
We are recruiting a number of Legal Interns across our Film and TV businesses based at our Central London office.
Legal Intern (Business Affairs, Content Group)
The Legal Interns (2 roles available) work within Universal Pictures Content Group, dealing with the acquisition, distribution and production of Film and TV content.
You will work with lawyers from the start of the deal where a title has been board approved, the signing of the deal, through to the completion of legal delivery.
The role involves working closely with the Marketing, Operations, Content Strategy and Finance teams, providing the opportunity to gain a strong insight into the wider business.
You will manage and update spreadsheets with deal details and rights information.
You will also communicate with members of the international business throughout Europe and the US, confirming the rights positions of titles. The Intern enters rights information into the database which requires the interpretation of signed agreements.
The role also involves sourcing and drafting documentation essential for the content release and sharing it with the business.
Legal Intern (Business and Legal Affairs, BALA)
Working within the central business & legal affairs (BALA) team which supports scripted TV production for Universal International Studios and Heyday Television, you’ll work closely with a team of 6 BALA execs and have a varied role assisting the team in a range of tasks related to the development, production and financing of scripted television. This includes, without limitation:
Producing deal summaries & helping to track deal negotiations (e.g., through creating grids and trackers)
Assisting with a range of drafting requests (e.g., amendments, side letters, turnaround agreements)
Attending meetings and taking notes where relevant
Assisting with a variety of ad-hoc requests e.g., research on companies/writers; chain of title research
Assisting where needed with key contracts and systems management matters (e.g., tracking option dates)
Helping to liaise with internal teams e.g., Finance, Production etc. on various matters (e.g., ensuring payments have been processed)
Legal Intern (Networks & Hayu)
Working within a friendly and dedicated legal team that supports the international TV channels business of a US Studio (NBCUniversal); NBCUniversal’s Hayu streaming business and its compliance team.
Work will include:
Drafting & Review of contracts and other legal documents
Legal Research
Managing tracking and signing processes
Working on precedents and using these for business transactions
Assisting the Networks team in relation to our TV and direct-to-consumer business
Assisting the Compliance team re the company’s policies relating to bribery, gifts, entertainment, interaction with government bodies and Code of Conduct
Assisting the Hayu team in their role as counsel to Hayu, NBCUniversal’s reality TV streaming platform
Legal Intellectual Property Intern (Corporate)
As a Brands & Content Intellectual Property Intern, you will support the protection and enforcement of NBCUniversal’s prized portfolio of popular film and television brands and content, ranging from franchises like Despicable Me/Minions to Jurassic Park/Jurassic World. You will support managing and operating our global anticounterfeiting and enforcement programs, researching IP rights and investigating infringements, drafting cease and desist letters and witness statements, and providing training to law enforcement authorities, as well as having exposure to a broad range of IP issues.
Universal Products & Experiences (UP&E) globally drives expansion of the company's intellectual properties, franchises, characters and stories through innovative physical and digital products, content, and consumer experiences. Along with franchise brand management, UP&E’s core businesses include Consumer Products and Games and Digital Platforms. We take properties such as Jurassic World, Minions, Back to the Future, Wicked, Shrek and Gabby’s Dollhouse from our creative content engines like Universal Pictures, Illumination and DreamWorks Animation and partner with best-in-class category leaders (e.g. Mattel, Lego, H&M, Lush, Microsoft, etc.) to create amazing products for our fans.
The Legal Intern works within UP&E Business & Legal Affairs team, a highly collaborative and commercially-focused team that provides legal support and advice to category and creative teams across our European offices.
As a Legal Intern, you will:
Collaborate with lawyers and contract managers drafting agreements and legal documents related to consumer product licensing arrangements, retail/marketing activations, NDA’s and service agreements.
Assist in tracking and following up on contracts that have been sent externally for review and signature, ensuring deals are brought to completion within designated timeframes.
Prepare documents for electronic signature and ensure signed contracts, amendments and correspondence are archived and organised within our internal document management systems.
Support the B&LA department with additional tasks as needed to achieve business and speed-to-market goals.
Work closely with commercial, finance, franchise, creative, and other legal teams within the company, offering valuable insight to how we protect and licence our brands.
This is a fantastic opportunity to grow your legal skills. NBCUniversal has a great record of nurturing and retaining talent, of developing and training lawyers and a very active SRA Training Programme for its paralegals.
