SUMMARY: The Queens University of Charlotte Campus Recreation Graduate Assistant’s overall mission is to enrich the co-curricular experience of students at Queens University of Charlotte. This role establishes and maintains an active, highly visible, and deeply engaged presence to sustain and grow strong collaborative relationships with students, university faculty and staff. Primary responsibilities include student staff supervision, scheduling and training, managing an intramural sports program, and growing wellness programing for the campus community. This part-time, 20 hours a week Graduate Assistant position reports to the Assistant Athletic Director Sport Administration/Director of Campus Recreation.

The successful candidate must be currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Queens University of Charlotte. This GA role includes tuition remission for up to two (2) courses per semester, including summer, while actively serving in the GA role. In addition, GAs are provided campus dining plans of 5 (living off campus) or 10 (living on campus) swipes during the academic year, free on-campus parking, and free membership to Queens Fitness Center. GAs enjoy flexible scheduling. Time away must be coordinated in advance with the GA’s immediate supervisor.

The GA is recognized as a University Official and represents the university and the department on and off university property. Under the supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director Sport Administration/Director of Campus Recreation, the GA position begins when filled. There is no expressed or implied commitment to a paid position upon completion of the internship.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As a GA, you will learn and apply knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Learn and assist in strategic planning of campus-wide programming, in conjunction with the Assistant Athletic Director Sport Administration/Director of Campus Recreation
  • Learn and host at least one program a semester in collaboration with campus partners
  • Learn and coordinate communication and marketing of Campus Recreation programs
  • Learn and practice fitness center management
  • Learn and practice budget and inventory management, including the supervision of a student equipment manager
  • Learn and create ways to increase student, faculty and staff engagement (through marketing, etc)
  • Learn and manage the onboarding, scheduling and training of student employees

 Non-essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department, Student Life, Athletics and/or university needs
  • Assist students and other guests who visit Levine Center
  • Serve on advisory committees with faculty, staff, and students as needed

Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required

  • At least one year of experience working as part of a student activities or another student affair functional area 
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at Queens University of Charlotte
  • Possess leadership skills and the ability to work in a team 
  • Possess effective communication skills in order to successfully approach people, mediate problem situations, and enforce policies 
  • Easily approachable, friendly, and able to establish rapport with students 
  • Ability to use discretion and exercise good judgment 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information 
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion
  • Experience that demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of first-generation college students
  • Remain calm, cool and collected in time of crisis
  • Exceptionally strong communication skills (verbal, written, interpersonal, presentation) and ability to quickly establish and maintain strong rapport with a diverse student body, as well as throughout the university 
  • Ability to mediate problems, situations, and enforce policies
  • Ability to maintain confidential information in a professional manner

 Renumeration

  • Graduate Assistants are eligible for 2 tuition-free graduate courses per academic semester, including summer if actively serving in the graduate assistant role. IMPORTANT: No tuition remission is available for Cybersecurity Management courses.
  • Graduate Assistants for Student Affairs are provided with a campus-dining plan during the academic year (5 meals/week) and free membership to the Levine Fitness Center. 
  • Graduate Assistants are eligible for free on-campus parking.
  • Graduate Assistants enjoy flexible scheduling. Time away to be coordinated with immediate supervisor.
  • Graduate Assistants may be employed outside of Queens for part time work as agreed upon with their supervisor, so long as it does not interfere with the core learnings of this position.

Live-in Potential

  • Graduate Assistants within Student Affairs are the first considered for the four emergency response graduate support positions that are live-in. These positions are selected separately by Residence Life. The Emergency Response Graduate Support Positions will be expected to be available during emergency situations on campus (inclement weather, etc.) and participate in an on-call rotation to respond to after-hours emergencies. This is an additional responsibility above and beyond your graduate assistantship and thus is treated separately. On-campus housing is provided for free in return for the duties as part of this separate role. On-campus housing includes a one-bedroom furnished apartment including water, electricity, internet, and free onsite laundry. Live-in Graduate Assistants also receive an increased campus dining plan and thus receive (10 meals/week and $450 Lions dollars per year). On-campus housing is pet and partner friendly.
