We are seeking a 6th Grade English Teacher and House Advisor to join the Middle School for the 2026-2027 school year. The Dalton Middle School encompasses Grades 4th – 8th grades and the 6th grade team has six House Advisors, two of which are English teachers.  

The ideal candidate is passionate and knowledgeable about progressive middle school education and differentiation. We seek teachers who are enthusiastic about working collaboratively to improve pedagogy and to design innovative curriculum that addresses the whole child. The 6th Grade English teacher is responsible for instruction and curriculum development, which in 6th grade includes a focus on expository paragraph and essay writing, literary analysis, creative writing, and poetry. Current novels read include Jar of Dreams, Becoming Naomi Leon, and Black Ships Before Troy, and the curriculum includes an in-depth study of Greek myths in preparation for the culminating interdisciplinary Greek Festival. There are opportunities each year for curricular innovation and the proposal of new novels and Assignments. Departmentalization begins in the 6th grade at Dalton and students are given a lot of responsibility in learning to scaffold long-term Assignments. Effective instruction in executive functioning and collaborating with learning support is foundational to this role. 

Full-time teachers also serve as House Advisors, working with a group of 6th graders as the primary point of contact for the students and parents.  House Advisors collaborate as a 6th grade team to develop House curriculum on grade-specific topics and community building programs. 

Responsibilities:

  • Teach three sections of 6th grade English. 
  • Collaborate with the other 6th Grade English Teachers, Humanities Learning Specialist, and Department Chair to develop effective, differentiated lessons.   
  • House Advise, serving as the primary point of contact for the students and parents.
  • Collaborate with other 6th Grade House Advisors to develop House curriculum on grade-specific topics and community building programs. House lessons cover a wide range of topics, including social-emotional learning, health and wellness activities, and lessons on digital communication and citizenship
  • Communicate frequently about student progress, including leading family conferences twice a year.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education or a related field.
  • Experience teaching Middle School grades (5-8), in Language Arts or English.  
  • Experience developing humanities curriculum.
  • Experience looking at vertical alignment of writing skills.
  • Places value in using an asset based, whole child approach to supporting students.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong commitment to collaborate in support of students and the curriculum.
  • Is a reflective practitioner who possesses curiosity and a willingness to grow professionally.
  • Cultivates and models values of respect, integrity, kindness, compassion and justice.
