At Tennis Australia, we’re creating a more playful world through tennis – for everyone.

From grassroots to Grand Slams, tennis brings people together, inspires communities, and builds champions on and off the court.

We’re a team of imaginative and passionate people who believe in the power of sport to make a difference. If you're ready to help us serve up real impact, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re committed to reflecting the communities we work and play in. We strongly encourage applications from women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTQI+ individuals, people with disability, and people from culturally diverse backgrounds.”

About the role

We're looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Technology & Digital team, permanent and full-time, to help shape the next chapter of our Australian Open web platform — one of Australia's most-visited sports destinations during the summer of tennis.

You'll work alongside product, design, business analysis, and QA to build solutions that serve millions of fans and meet real business needs. It's a chance to drive technical excellence and digital experience on a platform with genuine scale and visibility.

What you'll do

  • Lead backend development and maintenance of the Australian Open digital experience
  • Write secure, maintainable, well-tested code, and help others do the same through reviews and shared standards
  • Work in an Agile team to identify and resolve technical challenges early
  • Keep documentation clear and useful, and bring new ideas in from across the industry

What you'll bring

  • Deep Drupal and PHP expertise — custom module development, hooks, the entity system, content modelling, and configuration management, grounded in solid OOP and SOLID principles
  • API and data fluency — building and consuming REST and/or GraphQL APIs, plus working confidently with relational databases (MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL) and query optimisation
  • A performance, security, and accessibility mindset — familiarity with Drupal's caching mechanisms, security best practices, and an understanding of how backend choices (content structure, API responses, CMS configuration) shape the accessibility of the final product
  • Modern engineering practices — Composer, Git and collaborative branching workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing
  • Clear communication — able to explain technical decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and strong problem-solving instincts
  • A tertiary qualification in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • A current Police Check and Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain both)
  • Flexibility around working hours during key Tennis Australia events

What’s to love?

  • Career development with a range of formal education and on the job training opportunities
  • Tickets to the Australian Open plus Superbox tickets to events at Rod Laver & Melbourne Arena
  • Monthly health & wellbeing activities with access to CorePlus Pilates
  • Onsite gym, tennis facilities & free onsite car parking
  • Salary packaging & a range of discounts from our sponsorship partners
  • Attractive leave benefits - with up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave for all primary caregivers and Sorry Business and Ceremonial Leave for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees
  • We are proud to be recognised as an employer of choice for women by WORK180
