Job Description :

The New York Post is heading West – and this is your chance to be a part of history as we open a brand-new newsroom and make a significant investment in Los Angeles. The California Post will be a game changer, putting the people of the Golden State first and holding the powerful to account across digital platforms and print.

This is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: The California Post will bring The New York Post’s DNA of powerful, agenda-setting journalism to the West Coast and be a fresh and fearless voice for common sense.

Our focus will also go well beyond hard-hitting news and iconoclastic opinion. The nationally recognized Page Six will bring its sassy and brassy attitude directly to the entertainment capital of the world. The California Post Sports department will deliver muscular coverage of the biggest teams in town, from the locker room to the front office. Our Tech team will reveal the latest innovators and innovations that will shape the nation’s future.

Los Angeles is one of the great cities of the world, and it’s time L.A. – and California at large – had a bold, new voice. The California Post will be that voice. California, here we come!

The California Post is seeking a Deputy Sports Editor to help lead our sports coverage in one of the greatest sporting cities in the world. Reporting to the Sports Editor, the Deputy Sports Editor will play a key role in managing the day-to-day operation of the sports desk — from managing reporters, to ensuring our content is simply the best.

With LA the home to world famous franchises like the Lakers, Dodgers and the Rams, this is the dream job for the leader who loves sport and loves setting the agenda.

The successful candidate for this hands-on editing role knows what the fans want to know, has a strong understanding of California sport including college sport and is committed to finding the great stories. They will be critical to helping create a great environment for our reporting team and will be audience focused in all they do to maximize the reach of content. The Deputy Sports Editor will serve as a crucial partner to the Sports Editor, ensuring across digital and print, the California Post sets the sports agenda in Los Angeles and beyond.

Application Instructions: Applicants should submit a cover letter or a short video cover letter. If submitting a video, please include a link to the video in your cover letter or as part of an additional document. We do not accept direct video file uploads.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Sports Editor in overseeing all sports coverage for the California Post
  • Manage the daily workflow of the sports desk, setting priorities, assigning stories, and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Edit, polish, and elevate copy to meet the Post’s standards of clarity, impact, and voice
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and mentorship to reporters and columnists, helping them sharpen their coverage and source stories
  • Identify stories, trends, and cultural moments that matter to LA sports fans
  • Collaborate with the Sports Editor on shaping coverage strategies to ensure the Post is setting the pace, not following the pack
  • Work closely with photo, design, video, and digital teams to package stories in creative, engaging ways
  • Partner with the audience development team to expand the reach of our sports coverage across digital and social platforms
  • Monitor analytics and audience insights to help refine coverage and grow readership

Requirements:

  • At least 7 years of professional sports journalism experience, including newsroom leadership or editing experience
  • Strong editing and headline-writing skills, with the ability to sharpen copy quickly under deadline pressure
  • Proven knowledge of Los Angeles and national sports, with strong instincts for what stories will resonate with fans
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced newsroom environment
  • Experience mentoring and guiding reporters to deliver impactful coverage
  • Proficiency with WordPress or similar CMS platforms; familiarity with digital workflows
  • Strong understanding of social media and audience engagement strategies
  • Collaborative spirit with excellent communication and organizational skills
  • A passion for sports and the storytelling that brings fans closer to the teams, players, and culture they care about
