Responsibilities

The Associate Dean for Advising and Student Development plays a central role in our Student Success Center. The Associate Dean oversees our advising program and coordinates outreach and development for professional and faculty advisors, supervises and mentors student success advisors, serves as a senior success advisor to a cohort of SMC students, and collaborates with offices and staff across the College on issues related to student support, advising, and retention. 

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to student success and development, with the ability to balance thoughtful, informed, and empathetic support for individual students with a broader understanding of institutional goals, policies, and student success initiatives. They will be skilled at recognizing how individual student experiences can illuminate larger patterns, challenges, and opportunities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the College’s Advising Program to support, develop, and enhance the quality of advising across the College 
  • Report and serve as thought partner to the Dean of Undergraduate Education in providing informed, creative programs for student success
  • Coordinate the College’s academic outreach system and work with faculty to coordinate response and support 
  • Serve as primary success advisor for an assigned cohort of students, including students on academic probation   
  • Advise students on violations of the College’s Academic Integrity Policy and attend academic integrity hearings as needed in according with College policy 
  • Collaborate with Registrar and Dean of Undergraduate Education to support student degree planning, including advising and registration for incoming and transfer students 
  • Coordinate with College personnel and offices on student success, including The Office of Accessibility, Athletics, Health and Counseling Services, Student Affairs, and Student Financial Services   
  • See the value of cultural, ethnic, gender, and other individual differences in people, and help create an environment of learning about valuing, encouraging, and supporting difference 

 

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in undergraduate advising; senior advising and/or supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to think analytically, creatively, and sympathetically about complex and evolving needs of a diverse student body
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently and with a team in fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products
  • An offer of employment will be contingent upon the successful completion of a background check
