The District is seeking applicants for a full-time, 215 day per year, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director position at Mariner High School. Contract will start on July 1, 2026.

 

Annual salary listed is the 2025-26 rates.

 

 

 

JOB TITLE:                         HIGH SCHOOL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – ATHLETICS (AP/AD)

 

CLASSIFICATION:             ADMINISTRATIVE

 

REPORTS TO:                     HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

JOB SUMMARY: The High School Assistant Principal supports the principal in leading a diverse student body. This role promotes academic achievement and the social, emotional, and physical development of all students through effective instructional leadership, school operations, and strong partnerships with families and the community. The Assistant Principal ensures the district’s commitment to equity is embedded in all aspects of school leadership, decision-making, and collaboration. This includes actively identifying and addressing systemic inequities and supporting students furthest from educational justice. In addition to core assistant principal responsibilities, this position serves as the school’s Athletic Director (AD), overseeing all aspects of the athletics program, including budgets, personnel, scheduling, compliance, and student-athlete development. The Assistant Principal/Athletic Director works to build a positive, inclusive, and high-performing athletics program aligned with the school’s mission and values.

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Promote and lead efforts aligned with the district’s commitment to equity, focusing on eliminating opportunity gaps.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive school culture that supports student belonging, engagement, and achievement.
  • Support innovative practices that respond to the diverse needs of students and families.
  • Support high-quality instruction through classroom visibility, feedback, and collaboration with teachers.
  • Assist in aligning curriculum, instruction, and assessment with state and district standards.
  • Use multiple data sources to monitor student progress and guide instructional decisions.
  • Support Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and staff professional development.
  • Oversee student behavior systems, including discipline, restorative practices, and intervention strategies.
  • Lead or support Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  • Monitor attendance, engagement, and intervention systems to improve student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with counselors, specialists, and families to support student success.
  • Manage school operations to ensure a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of school safety and emergency response plans.
  • Supervise campus activities, events, and student conduct.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate staff to promote effective performance and professional growth.
  • Support the development of staff leadership capacity.
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among staff.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with families and the broader community.
  • Manage fiscal and human resources to support student achievement and ensure compliance with legal requirements.
  • Compile, submit reports and required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, district policies, and professional standards.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and fulfill contractual responsibilities.
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for all interscholastic athletics programs as Athletic Director.
  • Develop and sustain a positive, inclusive, and competitive athletics program aligned with school and district values.
  • Promote academic success, leadership, sportsmanship, and well-being among student-athletes.
  • Ensure compliance with all district, state (WIAA), and league (WESCO) regulations.
  • Implement and monitor risk management protocols to ensure student safety in athletics.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate coaches and athletics staff.
  • Coordinate game schedules, transportation, facilities, and event management.
  • Oversee supervision and operations of athletic events and activities.
  • Develop and manage athletics budgets and monitor expenditures.
  • Ensure athletic facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained.
  • Build relationships with students, families, and the community to increase participation and support for athletics programs.

 

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of public school systems, policies, and legal requirements governing school operations and student services.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and culturally responsive and inclusive practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive leadership, including the ability to identify and address systemic inequities.
  • Skill in instructional leadership, including supporting effective teaching practices, professional learning communities, and continuous school improvement.
  • Knowledge and experience with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and data-informed decision-making.
  • Knowledge of athletic program management, including compliance with state (WIAA), league (WESCO), and district regulations.
  • Knowledge of risk management, student safety practices, and supervision of school and athletic events.
  • Skill in hiring, supervising, evaluating, and developing staff, including building leadership capacity in others.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and competing demands.
  • Skill in effective decision-making, problem-solving, and group facilitation.
  • Skill in conflict resolution, including addressing student discipline, staff concerns, and community issues.
  • Skill in effective communication and collaboration with diverse students, families, staff, and community stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead and facilitate conversations related to race, equity, and inclusion with staff and community.
  • Ability to analyze systems and practices to improve student outcomes and eliminate opportunity gaps.
  • Ability to utilize district and community resources to support student success and program effectiveness.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond effectively in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Washington State Principal Certificate (or eligibility required).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of administrative experience at the secondary level preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Experience as a coach or Athletic Director preferred.
